Even Indoor Cats Should Be Microchipped

House cats can and do get out, which is why the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) says that it “strongly” advocates the permanent identification of all pet cats regardless of the completely indoor lifestyle people may intend for them. Any stress or discomfort that might come with implantation can easily be mitigated by respectful handling, distraction, and the use of topic analgesics.

The AAFP notes that microchip numbers are a vital part of a cat’s medical history and “must” be included in the medical record.
